Billboard confirmed Wednesday that LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” will finally appear atop its Hot 100, fueled by its attainment of 395,000 digital sales in the week leading up to Christmas.
LMFAO becomes the first duo to achieve back-to-back number ones since Outkast achieved the feat in the winter of 2003-2004. “Party Rock Anthem,” that previous number one, also had a big sales week, with the final shopping frame of the holidays driving 214,000 downloads. On such heat, it returns to the top 10 on the Hot 100.
“Sexy and I Know It” finally unseats Rihanna’s “We Found Love (featuring Calvin Harris),” which claimed a Rihanna-best eight weeks at the top of the mountain. The song’s position on the digital sales chart slowed to number three this week, but it retains the airplay crown.
A big developing story is the rise of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” It is very difficult for a sixth single to “explode” on the charts–and one can argue this has not done so to the extent of her other smashes–but in moving to third on this week’s Hot 100, it finds itself just two spots away from a record. Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is currently tied with Michael Jackson’s “Bad” for production of five number one singles; “The One That Got Away” marks her opportunity to put that record to bed.
Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” and Jay-Z & Kanye West’s “Niggas in Paris” close out the top five.
