“Harry Potter” Sets Major Box Office Record, More Coming this Weekend

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” destroyed the “New Moon” single-day box office record Friday, positioning itself not only for a dominant weekend victory, but for the largest weekend opening of all time.

“Potter” grossed $92.1 million Friday, which sets it up for a clear overtaking of the opening weekend record. That record, which currently belongs to “The Dark Knight,” stands at $158.4 million.

Thanks to the strong “Potter” performance, the overall box office had its best day of all-time Friday.

Elsewhere, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” fell to number two on $6.3 million in receipts. Currently at $288 million total, a flirtation with the $300 million domestic mark is imminent for the second “Transformers” sequel.

“Horrible Bosses” landed in third on $5.5 million Friday, which represents a somewhat steeper-than-expected drop for the well-reviewed comedy, especially since it was not battling any new comedic entries this weekend.

“Zookeeper” scored $3.9 million for fourth, while new release “Winnie the Pooh” posted $2.9 million in fifth. Like “Potter,” “Pooh” received phenomenal reviews.
