“Horrible Bosses” Kicks Off Well at Box Office, “Zookeeper” Behind

Though not tracking to top the more than $31 million earned by “Bad Teacher” in its debut earlier this summer, well-reviewed “Horrible Bosses” is still on pace for an impressive opening weekend.

It earned just about $10 million in its opening Friday, which should put the film on pace for a more than $25 million weekend, consistent with the improved recent tracking. The Friday tally exceeds that of “Bridesmaids,” which earned $8 million en route to a $26 million first weekend, but that movie had better word-of-mouth and a skew that would, on paper, appear more Saturday-friendly.

Even with its strong opening, “Horrible Bosses” will prove no match for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” The film added $14.9 million Friday and should clear $40 million for the weekend.

Meanwhile, new release “Zookeeper” grossed $7.4 million Friday. Even without taking into account improved family business Saturday, the film should be on pace to clear $20 million and therefore live up to late tracking. That total, nonetheless, was below what many would have forecast upon first learning of the project. THR says the production budget came in at $80 million for the Kevin James starrer.
