Though down by more than 40% from last week’s chart-topping performance, “Hop” had no trouble claiming the weekend box office for a second week thanks to weak debut performances.
At an estimated $21.7 million, “Hop” easily overcame the threat from the new “Arthur” remake. Never expected to be a smash, the film came in way below expectations at a mere $12.6 million. On the estimated chart, that puts “Arthur” slightly ahead of “Hanna,” which opened to $12.3 million.
On less screens than the aforementioned new releases, “Soul Surfer” garnered $11.1 million for the highest per-screen average of the new releases. Still, at $11.1 million, it hardly set the world on fire, although with a lower-budget and modest expectations, it is definitely not a failure.
Horror holdover “Insidious” claimed fifth place at $9.7 million (with an impressive drop-off of only 27%), topping the disappointing $9.5 million for newcomer “Your Highness.”
