Slightly outpacing modest mid-week projections, the poorly-reviewed “Sucker Punch” managed to win the box office Friday night.
The latest Zack Snyder film garnered $8.1 million in receipts, which was enough to top fellow newcomer “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” ($7.3 million). Given the tendency of family-skewing films to perform well with Saturday matinee crowds, “Wimpy Kid” will likely still win the weekend, but the “Sucker Punch” performance is still solid given the weak expectations.
Analysts were looking for mid-to-high teens from “Sucker Punch;” it is currently tracking for just over $20 million.
But with neither new release setting the world on fire, holdovers were able to retain fairly well Friday. “Limitless” managed a healthy $4.6 million Friday en route to a likely mid-teens weekend, while “The Lincoln Lawyer” landed at $3.0 million. “Rango” pulled fifth place on $2.4 million in receipts.
