Becki Newton Joins CBS Pilot From “That ’70s Show” Writers, “How I Met Your Mother” Renewed

For the second consecutive season, “Ugly Betty” alum Becki Newton has scored a pilot deal on a major network sitcom. Now the hope is that the ever-in-demand television actress actually ends up on television next season.

With her NBC series “Love Bites” looking to be a non-starter, Newton has booked a role on the CBS comedy pilot formerly known as “Home Grown.”

From “That 70s Show” writers Jackie and Jeff Filgo, the pilot centers on a blue collar dad who lives with his widowed mother, his wife, their adult daughter (Newton) and her twelve-year-old son.

Andy Ackerman will direct the pilot.

— In other CBS comedy news, “How I Met Your Mother” has been renewed for two additional seasons at CBS. While one should never say never regarding a hit comedy’s shelf-life, the assumption for several years has been that this order–which takes the show through its eighth season–would bring the show to its conclusion.

All five principles will be on the show for the duration of the order.
