“Little Fockers” Wins Box Office, “Gulliver’s Travels” Bombs, “True Grit” Strong

“Little Fockers” predictably won the Christmas weekend box office, but its performance was far from spectacular. The gross was down 26% from that of predecessor “Meet the Fockers,” which opened on an identically-dated Christmas weekend in 2004.

“Fockers” pulled an estimated $34 million from the box office over the three-day holiday weekend, bringing its five-day total to $48.3 million. Though its haul still ranked below “Meet the Fockers,” relative to its prior days’ performance, it proportionately outperformed the predecessor on Christmas Day, likely a sign of the abysmal box office competition.

“Little Fockers” earned $14.6 million on Christmas Day, a total that more than doubles that of its $7.2 million opener on Wednesday. “Meet the Fockers” grossed $19.5 million, which made for a smaller jump from the $12.1 million Wednesday opening.

“True Grit,” meanwhile, outpaced expectations with an impressive $25.6 million holiday weekend bow. The acclaimed remake’s total now sits at $36.8 million.

“Tron Legacy” ($20.1 million), “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($10.8 million) and “Yogi Bear” ($8.8 million) rounded out the top five.

While “Little Fockers” might have underwhelmed, it at least avoided falling into the “bomb” territory. “Gulliver’s Travels” was not so lucky, however, ranking only seventh on $7.2 million for Saturday and Sunday. Stars Jack Black and Jason Segel put the time in on the media front, but the unappealing promotional campaign and awful reviews were not enough to spark interest in the re-telling of the literary classic.
