What many would have viewed as a sure thing at the box office–the pairing of legitimate superstars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie–was not enough to help “The Tourist” avoid a disappointing performance.
Given away by recent weeks’ tracking data, the film simply could not click with audiences, opening to a mere $6 million Friday. Currently forecast for $18 million, there is no way the film’s performance, a strong candidate for second place, can be viewed as a positive.
The performance is roughly on par with that of this summer’s “Knight and Day,” another disappointment given the high-profile pairing of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Despite weak reviews, this film, however, was presumed to feature principal players who were considerably more bankable.
But even the first place film failed in its battle to impress. Forecast by some for a debut in the $35-40 million range, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” looks to instead be on pace for a opening weekend in the high-$20 millions. Deadline reports Friday’s take as $8.2 million, which simply does not position the film for a $40 million total.
