“Life as We Know It” Tops Mild Friday Box Office, “Secretariat” Soft

“Life as We Know it” claimed a slow Friday at the box office, but its lead over “The Social Network” is so slim that either could end up claiming the entire weekend.

“Life” garnered $5.3 million, creating a narrow margin over “Network” ($4.9 million). Both should land in the $15 million-territory by weekend’s end, which means that the Facebook film remains in the running for a second week on top.

New release “The Secretariat” can also not totally be counted out, but even if it manages to compete for the weekend crown, its $4.1 million, third place performance Friday will remain something of a disappointment.

Also new was “My Soul to Take,” which made nothing of its Wes Craven involvement and higher 3D ticket prices. It grossed $2.7 million for fourth, slightly edging “The Town” and “Legend of the Guardians,” which both came in at around $1.8 million.

On the semi-limited front, “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” made no real impact, garnering $679,000 from 742 screens.
