“Inception” On Top, But “Salt” Solid in Box Office Debut; “Ramona & Beezus” Behind

Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” got off to a perfectly respectable start Friday, but the performance was unable to give the film the box office victory.

“Salt” grossed $12.7 million Friday, which put it inches behind “Inception”‘s $13.2 million. Though not expected to overtake “Inception” this weekend, the film’s total could still move as high as $35 million when the weekend is said and done, an impressive figure for a movie-star-led action film in the current day.

“Despicable Me” grabbed third place with $7.4 million, topping the $3 million for newcomer “Ramona & Beezus.” The total for the latter is soft and definitely not a favorable testament to Selena Gomez’s potential for box office impact, although the film never figured to have mass appeal and was produced on a low $15 million, according to Deadline.

With just $2.9 million, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” landed in fifth.
