Tom Cruise’s reprisal of Les Grossman at the MTV Movie Awards temporarily renewed his buzz level with young audiences, but for that step forward, his profile took several steps back this week.
New film “Knight and Day,” in which Cruise co-stars with fellow heavy-hitter Cameron Diaz, bombed at the box office Wednesday, earning an estimated $3.8 million in receipts according to Fox. The film had been tracking poorly in the weeks prior to the release, but as a source tells Deadline, the film is now on pace for a five-day opening below “even the most evil estimates.”
While nothing is set in stone, Deadline had reported an industry rumor that “Mission: Impossible 4″‘s status had been in jeopardy based on poor tracking for “Knight and Day.” Most do not believe the project, for which a lot of time and resources have been committed, will simply be scrapped, but if it turns out there were any truth to that bit of Hollywood gossip, “Knight and Day”‘s current level of box office disappointment certainly would have done its part in pulling the trigger.
