“Toy Story 3” Misses Box Office Record, “Jonah Hex” Fails

After getting off to a big start on Friday, “Toy Story 3” slowed down slightly this weekend, failing to set the all-time animated film box office record.

Though its $109 million opening, which outpaced many pre-weekend forecasts, was still viewed as phenomenal, it landed a good bit behind “Shrek The Third”‘s record $121.6 million opening from 2007.

It nonetheless had no trouble topping holdover “The Karate Kid” ($29 million) for the Father’s Day weekend crown.

Though unable to salvage is disappointing opening weekend performance, “The A-Team” held up fairly well for a film in the genre, adding $13.8 million to its gross this weekend. “Get Him to the Greek” landed in fourth with $6.1 million, topping “Shrek: The Final Chapter”‘s $5.5 million.

“Jonah Hex” was a complete dud in its opening frame, earning just $5.1 million for eighth place. Though final figures could send it all the way up to sixth or fifth, the actual number is an utter disappointment, registering at just about half of what studio insiders projected AFTER officially writing the film off as a likely bomb.

On the limited front, well-reviewed John C. Reilly-Jonah Hill vehicle “Cyrus” pulled $180,000 from four screens.
