“The Karate Kid” topped expectations and impressed the film community, earning a strong $56 million in its debut weekend for an easy box office victory.
The film’s gross more than doubled that of “The A-Team,” which was good for only $26 million. With a significantly bigger budget and more internal hype within the film community, the film’s performance was considered a significant disappointment–the blowout loss to “Karate Kid” only added to the miss.
“Shrek: The Final Chapter,” the holdover winner, fell to third place with $15.8 million this weekend to finally cross the $200 million barrier. Also in the top five were “Get Him to the Greek” ($10.1 million) and “Killers” ($8.2 million).
