“Glee” Finale Ratings Surge; “Journey” Produces Milestone Number

After falling from grace with last week’s penultimate season one episode, “Glee” rebounded in a big way Tuesday, posting a stellar rating for its season finale.

Entitled “Journey,” the episode posted a 4.7 adults 18-49 rating with 11.075 million viewers. Though its “Hell’s Kitchen” lead-in also improved on last week’s number (3.2 rating, 6.964 million viewers), it was far from a substitute for the show’s previous “American Idol” lead-in–the “Glee” rating, however, was nearly in line with what the show had been doing for its post-“Idol” episodes in May.

While shows, especially those of the buzzworthy sort, are known for experiencing season finale increases, the actual jump was far better than expected. The show’s fall finale in 2009 did not enjoy a significant rise over the penultimate episode, so it is clear “Glee” established itself as significantly more “must-see” in its spring term.

Within other key demos, the show averaged a 5.0 for adults 18-34 and a 6.4 with women 18-34.

In addition to scoring a stellar rating for the night, “Glee” also scored a big achievement Tuesday–its episode was officially the best-rated season finale for a new series this season.

Though “Glee” topped “America’s Got Talent” (3.7, 13.088 million viewers) in the key adults 18-49 demo, it could not defeat game three of the NBA Finals, which scored a 6.7 rating with 15.959 million viewers for ABC.
