“Prince of Persia” Soft at Box Office, “Sex and the City 2” Leads

“Sex and the City 2” won Friday’s box office battle, but the reception to the sequel hardly positions the film to develop into one of the summer’s biggest hits.

The film earned just $13 million Friday, down slightly from the $14.2 million for Thursday’s opening. A $60 million cumulative gross by the end of the Memorial Day weekend is still reasonable, but the film’s tab will now presumably come in well below the $75 million that many had forecast.

“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” meanwhile, did nothing to electrify the box office, landing in third with $10.2 million; holdover winner “Shrek: The Final Chapter” was second with $11.3 million and has a good chance of outpacing “Sex” by the end of the weekend.

Also in the top five were “Iron Man 2” ($4 million) and “Robin Hood” ($2.9 million).
