“Nightmare on Elm Street” Claims Scary Box Office Victory

Horror remake “Nightmare on Elm Street” parlayed Friday’s dominant performance into a clear weekend victory, absolutely crushing competition from all other performances.

Estimates have the film grossing $32.2 million this weekend, beating second place performer “How to Train Your Dragon” by a multiple of almost three ($10.8 million). “Date Night” landed in third with $7.6 million, topping $7.2 million for “The Back-Up Plan” and $6.5 million for “Furry Vengeance,” a dud of a new release.

For what it is worth, “Elm Street” grossed less than the recent “Friday the 13th” remake but more than the first of Rob Zombie’s re-imagining of “Halloween.” With a $26.4 million opening weekend, “Halloween” ended up pulling $58.3 million domestically; “Friday the 13th” started with $40.6 million en route to a total of $65 million.
