A late Tuesday report on Variety.com says that FOX is nearing a final decision to pull the plug on long-running action series “24.”
The show has suffered a decline in both viewership and critical acclaim, and it thus does not appear to have a future beyond the current eighth season. While no final decision has been made, all indications are that the show will be canceled.
Because principal figures like Kiefer Sutherland had only been officially on board through the duration of the season, the future of “24” had been up in the air even before buzz started to fade this year. With the show’s flame fizzing out, the end appears now nearly certain.
While “24” will inevitably be shopped to other networks, it is unclear that any would have interest in picking up a veteran series that comes with such a high production budget.
More likely to come beyond this season is the long-anticipated “24” feature film, which has been gaining some traction in recent months.
