“Glee,” “Up in the Air” Dominate Golden Globe Nominations

On the film side, everyone knew the Golden Globe nominations would favor “Up in the Air” and “Nine.” On the television side, however, most assumed that if a new series would compete with forces like “30 Rock” and “Mad Men” at the top of the heap, it would be ABC’s acclaimed comedy “Modern Family.”

While that comedy did score a key nomination, it was actually FOX’s “Glee” that made the biggest mark. Tuesday’s nomination announcement confirmed that “Glee” pulled a total of four nominations, the highest of any television series.

“Glee” will compete with “Family,” “Entourage,” “The Office” and “30 Rock” for ‘Best Television Series-Comedy or Musical.’ Also up for Globes are lead actor Matthew Morrison, lead actress Lea Michele and supporting actress Jane Lynch. Lynch, whose Sue Sylvester is viewed as the show’s standout character, competes broadly with actresses from dramas, mini-series, movies and comedies.

Though many bloggers and television fans were thrilled with the love for “Glee,” there were instantly accusations of some harsh snubbing from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Notably absent from contention are comedies like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “The Big Bang Theory,” both of which have gotten rave reviews this year, while dramatic standouts like “Breaking Bad” (including lead actor Bryan Cranston) also sat the bence.

“Up in the Air” earned a total of six film nominations, while “Nine” pulled five nods. Also impressive on the film front was Sandra Bullock, who earned a dramatic lead actress nomination for “The Blind Side” and a comedic nod for “The Proposal.”
