“Zombieland” Kills Weekend Box Office, “Lying,” “Whip It” Disappoint

Critically-acclaimed action/comedy flick “Zombieland” cruised its way to a box office victory this weekend, topping an array of competitors that included animated family movies, comedies, action films and documentaries.

Estimates show “Zombieland” pulling $25 million this weekend, a figure more than great enough to unseat “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.” The latter film, which earned $16.7 million, defeated a 3D re-release of “Toy Story/Toy Story 2” ($12.5 million).

New release “The Invention of Lying” opened in fourth to a soft $7.4 million, but the total was enough to top new release “Whip It” ($4.9 million, 6th) and the expanded “Capitalism: A Love Story” ($4.9 million, 7th).

“Surrogates” slid into the top five with $7.3 million.
