“Vampire Diaries” Sets Record For CW

After the disappointing premiere numbers for “Melrose Place” and weak return numbers for “90210” and “America’s Next Top Model,” The CW’s 2009-10 season opened with anything but optimism. Luckily, “Vampire Diaries” opened with some much needed bite.

With 4.9 million viewers and a strong 2.1 in adults 18-49, the new series opened to the network’s highest premiere numbers ever. The show, which scored a 3.1/5 in households and a 3.1 in women 18-34, proved that despite the constant buzz for “True Blood” and “Twilight,” the vampire craze is not yet relenting.

The night of mostly re-runs nonetheless belonged to the NFL kickoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, which absolutely dominated the ratings.
