“The Final Destination” Slashes “Halloween” At Box Office

“The Final Destination” won the first day of the horror film war at the box office, greatly surpassing projections as it topped “Halloween II.”

Scoring the highest opening day in the history of the four-film franchise, “Destination” earned $10.9 million. Initially tracked for the high teens, the film will have no problem cracking into the $20 millions.

Predecessor “Final Destination 3” opened with $7.1 million en route to a $19.2 million debut weekend.

“Halloween II,” Rob Zombie’s sequel to his 2007 remake of the iconic horror film, earned $7.6 million Friday. In 2007, Zombie’s “Halloween” earned $10.9 million on its first Friday, grossing $26.4 million over the full weekend.

Elsewhere, “Inglourious Basterds” dipped 59% to $5.9 million. Its cumulative total presently sits at $59.6 million.

“District 9” earned $3 million Friday, while new release “Taking Woodstock” was good for $1.2 million.
