Rumors broke Thursday that Phil Baroni was on his way back to UFC. Given his unimpressive performance in Strikeforce, many assumed the rumors were untrue–why would the number one mixed martial arts promotion pick up a talent who was not cutting it in the number two group?
It turns out the reports were accurate. Baroni told MMAJunkie that he has indeed signed and is gearing for a return.
“I just signed and sent my contract back to the UFC,” said Baroni.
The story is particularly noteworthy because it gave Strikeforce true ammunition in its new “war” with UFC. Just days after UFC President Dana White dismissed Strikeforce as a small town promotion and just a day after UFC announced it was to run an encore of UFC 100 against Saturday’s Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg show, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker used the signing to take a subtle dig at UFC and its new pickup.
“We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career,” said Coker. “If he can, maybe one day, he can return and fight for us.”
Baroni’s return date and opponent have not yet been confirmed.
