Latest Backstage News On Edge, Tag Title Plans

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that several ideas have been discussed for the Unified Tag Team Championship in the wake of Edge’s Achilles tendon injury.

When the news of Edge’s injury first broke, all indications pointed to WWE finding a way to immediately put the belts on Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. WWE has since, however, begun talking about other plans, including having Edge hand his half of the championship to someone like Dolph Ziggler (believed to be out the window as of press time) or The Miz. WWE does want to keep DiBiase and Rhodes over as a top tag team, although with emerging reports about DiBiase suffering a minor shoulder injury, it is unclear if WWE will immediately crown them champions.

As evidence of WWE’s changing plans, WWE had originally decided not to reference Edge’s injury until next week, given Edge and Jericho’s appearance as champions on the taped SmackDown! telecast. The company reversed that move, revealing the injury–and how it was caused–on its website this week.

Edge’s injury does come as a major disappointment. In addition to the fact that Edge himself is one of the company’s most consistently over stars, WWE was also looking to build Edge and Jericho as a legitimate tag team force, with their own team name and long-term gimmick.
