With a stronger-than-expected Saturday performance, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” has officially topped the $200 million mark.
It took just five days for the anticipated, yet poorly-reviewed sequel to cross the threshold; thanks to a $112 million weekend, according to estimates, its cumulative gross now sits at $201.2 million.
“Transformers” sits just behind “The Dark Knight” on the all-time five-day gross list; last year’s smash hit earned $203.8 million in its first five days.
Though its release schedule was less ideal for a whopping gross, in its first five days, the first “Transformers” earned only $107.6 million. Following its first full weekend, its cumulative gross stood at $155.4 million.
The news was not so good for the weekend’s other newcomer–“My Sister’s Keeper” opened at the low end of projections with $12 million. It placed fifth.
“The Proposal” and “The Hangover” finished second and third with $18.5 million and $17.2 million, respectively. “The Hangover” continues to hold up well, and it should top the $200 million mark by next weekend. “Proposal” dipped 45.1% from last weekend’s winning gross.
“Up” was fourth with $13 million.
Bad reviews and demographic competition from “Transformers” destroyed the second weekend of “Year One.” It dropped a staggering 70% this weekend to finish sixth with $5.8 million.
