“Angels & Demons”‘ opening weekend gross fell far short of that posted by its “The Da Vinci Code” predecessor but still managed to claim the weekend crown.
With $48 million according to early estimates, the film topped the $43 million for “Star Trek”‘s second weekend. By comparison, “The Da Vinci Code” debuted with more than $77 million.
The second place finish for “Star Trek” nonetheless marked a solid outing. With a decline of only 42.8% from its big gross last weekend, a strong performance for a film in the genre, it is now only $3.5 million away from eclipsing the “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” total, despite having a week less of release under its belt.
“Angels & Demons” was alone in the new wide release category, although “Management” did debut on 212 screens this weekend. It performed poorly, earning only $378,000, or $1783 per screen.
