BTS at iHeartRadio Music Festival via BIGHIT MUSIC
From the moment the outdoor House of Music opened at Friday’s portion of the iHeartRadio Music Festival, it was clear ARMY were in for an exciting day from their beloved BTS.
The group’s “SWIM”-themed exhibit quickly consumed the lion’s share of interest, with the line becoming almost prohibitively long by 5PM PT. And as fans began to lineup for entry into the T-Mobile Arena, they left no doubt about their thrill to see and support the seven-member global phenomenon. Wearing merchandise, trading freebie gifts, and demonstrating utter joy, they were ready to see BTS thrive in this mainstream concert environment.
They would have to wait until the end of the show — BTS obviously main-evented Friday — but it was hardly a difficult wait. Kenny Chesney, Weezer, Goo Goo Dolls, Cardi B, and Zara Larsson all delivered big moments in their sets, with Goo Goo Dolls’ classic singles and Cardi B’s unparalleled presence ranking as particular standouts.
Still, the enthusiasm that took flight once Ryan Seacrest finally introduced BTS was like nothing experienced at any prior moment. For those in attendance not as attuned to the BTS universe, it might have been unlike anything they have experienced in any arena concert scenario.
After opening with recent hit single “SWIM,” the group moved into fellow “ARIRANG” song “2.0.” Longtime signature “MIC Drop” followed, before the group returned to “ARIRANG” to close the set with “FYA.”
Absent a traditional curtain call, the ending did feel a bit abrupt. Until the rise of the house lights nixed their dreams, some present assumed an encore was coming.
Still, there was no walking away anything but pleased with how this set turned out. This was not a by-the-numbers “mainstream taste” performance; it was an immersive tour through (mostly new) songs that (already) have special meaning to passionate fans yet can just as easily resonate with first-time listeners. Supported by a powerful transition, each song featured committed choreography, commanding mic work, and truly immersive effort.
Fan energy proved to be a non-trivial factor, with eager dancing and celebrations visible and audible throughout. The “MIC Drop Fan Chant” made for a particularly memorable moment.
In a press release on the performance, BIGHIT MUSIC said the intention was to chronicle the ongoing evolution of BTS.
“Anchored in the theme of ‘BTS 2.0,’ the performance translated the group’s continued evolution into a single narrative of rising, breaking beyond familiar boundaries and pressing forward. Drawing inspiration from the industrial world of the ‘2.0’ music video, each stage and transition formed part of one continuously expanding world, symbolizing growth, liberation and progression. The overarching theme of ‘BTS 2.0”’was not simply a new image, but a representation of BTS as they are today.”
The iHeartRadio Music Festival returns to Las Vegas Saturday with acts like Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Ciara, LE SSERAFIM, and Benson Boone on the bill.
