Going into Sunday’s 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards, oddsmakers listed “Veep” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a massive favorite to win Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series.
They were wrong.
“Fleabag” star Phoebe Waller-Bridge ended up taking home the trophy. In addition to Louis-Dreyfus, she beat out Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Christina Applegate (Dead To Me).
In addition to winning the acting award, Waller-Bridge won for Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series. “Fleabag” also picked up the Outstanding Directing award; it remains in the mix for overall comedy series.
