Dove Cameron is no stranger when it comes to a sexual double standard. She faces one as a woman in a historically patriarchal society. She also faces one as a Disney actress. Actions or outfits that even hint at the idea of sexuality can potentially come under fire.
The singer-actress has spoken against such societal suppression in the past, and she continued using her platform for good in a pair of Tuesday Instagram posts.
The selfies feature Cameron wearing a short white tank top with no indication of a bra. Though her outfit is actually rather casual, Cameron’s bare midriff and slightly visible nipples would still elicit criticism in a world of sexual suppression and double standards.
In posting the pictures, Cameron is refusing to relent to that double standard — and embracing her femininity.
With each post, Cameron also includes quotes about women’s empowerment; one from Trista Hendren and the other from Elizabeth Eiler.
