Weezer’s “Africa” Reaches #1 At Alternative Radio, Breaks Single-Week Airplay Record

“Africa” hits #1 thanks to the greatest spin tally in the history of the Mediabase chart.

Weezer’s immensely successful cover of “Africa” officially reaches #1 on this week’s Mediabase alternative radio chart.

“Africa,” which was #2 last week, takes #1 on the strength of its 3,520 tracking period spins. The count reflects a week-over-week gain of 367.

The tally, moreover, ranks as a new Mediabase record for most alternative radio spins in a single week. The record previously belonged to Portugal. The Man’s “Live In The Moment,” which received 3,495 spins during the March 18-24 tracking period.

Up one place, Twenty One Pilots’ “Jumpsuit” takes #2 on this week’s chart. It received 3,335 spins during the July 29-August 4 tracking period (+231).

Bastille’s “Quarter Past Midnight,” last week’s leader, falls to #3 with 3,084 spins (-112). Panic! At The Disco’s “Say Amen (Saturday Night)” holds at #4 with 2,708 spins (-164), while a play count of 2,554 (-57) keeps Lovelytheband’s “Broken” at #5.
