“The Equalizer 2” Narrowly Beats “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” At US Box Office

“The Equalizer 2” tops “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” at the US weekend box office.

New releases “The Equalizer 2” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” predictably earn the top two slots at the US weekend box office.

Based on studio estimates, the former takes first place. It is expected to close the weekend with $35.8 million.

“Mamma Mia!” lands in second with an estimated $34.4 million.

Both films outperformed their predecessors. The first “Equalizer” earned $34.1 million in its inaugural weekend, while the original “Mamma Mia!” grabbed $27.8 million.

“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” last weekend’s winner, follows at #3 on this weekend’s chart. It earned another $23.2 million, bringing its cumulative total to $91.1 million.

Down two places, “Ant-Man And The Wasp” takes #4 with $16.1 million (cume now $164.6 million). “Incredibles 2” concurrently falls one place to #5. It added $11.5 million to its running total (cume now $557.3 million).

— “Unfriended: Dark Web,” which launched on just under 1550 screens, takes ninth place with $3.5 million.
