“Ocean’s 8” just posted the best opening day tally in the history of the “Ocean’s” franchise.
It may challenge for the opening weekend record.
The film earned $15.8 million at the US Friday box office. While the count may not position “Ocean’s” as a bona fide blockbuster, it easily positioned “Ocean’s 8” as the day’s top film.
It also bested the $14.7 million earned by “Ocean’s Twelve” to rank as the best opening day for an “Ocean’s” film.
The question now centers on whether “Ocean’s 8” can set the franchise’s opening weekend record. It definitely has a real shot.
Analysts believe the film can close the weekend with upwards of $40 million. “Ocean’s Twelve,” the current record-holder, earned $39.2 million in its first weekend.
“Ocean’s Eleven” and “Ocean’s Thirteen,” the other modern “Ocean” films, respectively earned $38.1 million and $36.1 million.
As for the Friday box office, new release “Hereditary” took #2 with $5.2 million.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” followed in third with $4.0 million, while a Friday haul of $3.8 million positioned “Deadpool 2” in fourth.
Credited with $1.8 million, “Avengers: Infinity War” ranked as the day’s #5 film.
