Last weekend’s US box office story involved “Solo: A Star Wars Story” claiming first place but coming well short of expectations.
This weekend’s story involves “Solo” claiming first place but enduring a major week-to-week decline.
Per studio estimates, “Solo” will close the weekend with $29.3 million in receipts. While enough for #1 on the chart, the tally trails last week’s mark by a whopping 65%. Considering it did not start as well as expected, a second weekend drop of that magnitude is definitely disappointing.
By the end of its second weekend, “Solo” will boast a cumulative US total of $148.9 million. Analysts initially believed it could hit that mark prior to the start of weekend #2.
Still, a victory is a victory.
“Deadpool 2” takes second place with $23.3 million (cume now $254.7 million), while the new “Adrift” earns third with $11.5 million.
“Avengers: Infinity War” (#4, $10.4 million / cume now $642.9 million) and “Book Club” (#5, $6.8 million / cume now $47.3 million) complete the Top 5.
— New releases “Upgrade” and “Action Point” start at #6 and #9, respectively. The former earned $4.5 million from just under 1500 screens, while the latter grossed $2.3 million from a little over 2000 locations.
