ABC Cancels “Roseanne” Following Star’s “Abhorrent” Tweet

ABC will not be moving forward with a second season of “Roseanne.”

Earlier this spring, ABC renewed its “Roseanne” revival for a second season.

Tuesday, it abandoned that plan — and formally canceled the show.

The cancellation comes on the heels of an inflammatory Tweet from star Roseanne Barr.

“muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” wrote Barr. The “VJ” is a reference to Valerie Jarrett, who served as an advisor to former US President Barack Obama.

The Tweet sparked outrage from across the Internet — and within the “Roseanne” team. Consulting producer Wanda Sykes, in fact, declared that she would not be returning to the show.

Barr apologized, but the damage had already been done. ABC opted to cancel the show, with network Channing Dungey labeling the Tweet “abhorrent.”

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” said Dungey in a statement.

The “Roseanne” revival was ABC’s top-rated show — and one of the biggest shows on all of television — during the 2017-18 season.
