Backstreet Boys’ “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” Received Big Opening Day Radio Play

“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” received airplay at the hot adult contemporary and pop radio formats.

Backstreet Boys’ “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” spent much of Thursday at #1 on the US iTunes sales chart.

It also attracted considerable opening day attention at pop and hot adult contemporary radio.

Thanks in large part to launch support from the iHeartMedia network of stations, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” amassed 234 opening day spins at hot adult contemporary radio.

The count positions “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” at #36 on the Mediabase building Hot AC chart, which ranks songs based on the first five days of the May 13-19 tracking period.

San Francisco’s Star 101.3 led the way with 19 spins, while Tucson’s My 92.9 and Portland’s Coast 93.1 had each played the song 10 times by the end of Thursday. Dozens of other Hot AC stations played the song between 1 and 9 spins.

While “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” did not earn enough pop airplay for a Top 50 position on the building chart, it did receive a non-trivial amount of support.

Dozens of stations offered first-day airplay; Los Angeles’ 102.7 KIIS led the way with a whopping 25 plays.
