Powered by a monstrous opening week streaming total and strong first-week sales, Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” debuts at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song represents Gambino’s first Hot 100 chart-topper.
The Hot 100 ranks songs from all genres based on combined activity from sales, streams and radio airplay. In addition to debuting at #1 on the Hot 100, “This Is America” earns #1 on the Digital Song Sales and Streaming Songs charts.
“This Is America” launched in conjunction with Gambino’s performance on last week’s Saturday Night Live. Following the performance, the song rocketed to #1 on channels like iTunes and Spotify. The official music video also made major waves on YouTube.
It is worth noting that the sales and streaming tracking weeks run from Friday-Thursday. “This Is America,” therefore, earns its #1 debut despite not launching until late on the second day of tracking.
“This Is America” dethrones Drake’s “Nice For What” on this week’s chart. That song, which spent four weeks at #1, dips to #2.
