Fifty Shades Freed | Universal
While its total came in narrowly below that of predecessor “Fifty Shades Darker,” the new “Fifty Shades Freed” still managed to dominate the US box office on Friday.
“Fifty Shades Freed” earned $18.5 million in its first day of release (Thursday screenings included). The tally more than triples that of the day’s #2 film.
It, moreover, positions the film for an opening weekend sum in the $38-42 million range. That will be enough for convincing weekend victory.
Fellow new release “Peter Rabbit” took second place at the Friday box office. The film earned $5.7 million on opening day — and should hit $19-24 million by the end of the weekend.
“The 15:17 To Paris,” another noteworthy new release, took third place with $3.7 million in Friday receipts. It should hit $9-13 million by the end of the weekend.
“Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle” ($2.2 million, #4) and “The Greatest Showman” ($1.6 million, #5) rounded out the Top 5 Friday.
The former is pacing for a weekend tally in the $8-10 million range. The latter should earn $5.5-7.5 million.
