“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” Tops US Friday Box Office, Set For Weekend Win

The new “Maze Runner” film is on track to win the US weekend box office.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” may not have started as well as 2014’s “The Maze Runner” or 2015’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” but it still convincingly ranked as Friday’s top film in the US.

It, moreover, is on track to claim #1 for the overall weekend.

“The Death Cure” earned $8.4 million at the Friday box office (Thursday screenings included). The Friday tally positions “The Death Cure” for an opening weekend in the $19-25 million range.

2014’s “The Maze Runner” earned $11.3 million on opening Friday en route to a weekend gross of $32.5 million. “The Scorch Trials” earned $11.0 million on its first Friday and $30.3 million in its first full weekend.

Still, “The Death Cure” is performing well in the context of this weekend’s race.

“Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle,” its closest competitor, earned $3.8 million on Friday. It should close the weekend with $14-17 million.

The expanded “Hostiles” took third place Friday with $3.4 million; a weekend in the $8-11 million range seems likely.

Credited with another $2.5 million in receipts, “The Greatest Showman” took fourth place Friday. It should close the weekend with $8-11 million.

“The Post,” Friday’s #5 film, earned $2.5 million. It is poised for a weekend in the $7-10 million range.
