“Insidious” Tops US Friday Box Office, But “Jumanji” Set For Weekend Victory

“Insidious: The Last Key” was Friday’s #1 film, but it is not expected to win the weekend.

“Insidious: The Last Key” edged “Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle” for first place at the Friday US box office, but the latter is expected to take #1 on the weekend chart.

The new “Insidious” film debuted with $12.7 million Friday, while “Jumanji” added $10.8 million to its haul.

As a new film with less family (weekend matinee) appeal and an inflated Friday total due to Thursday night screenings (which account for about $2 million), “Insidious” is nonetheless expected to be more front-loaded. Analysts expect “Insidious” to close the weekend in the $24-27 million range.

“Jumanji,” on the other hand, should remain strong through Sunday. It should win the weekend with $33-38 million in receipts.

Credited with $6.6 million in recepits, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was Friday’s #3 film. “The Greatest Showman” (#4, $4.2 million) and “Pitch Perfect 3” (#5, $3.3 million) completed Friday’s Top 5.
