“Jigsaw” Wins US Friday Box Office, “Thank You For Your Service,” “Suburbicon” Flop

“Jigsaw” took first place at the Friday box office. The other big new releases started poorly.

On the one hand, “Jigsaw” got off to a slower start than all but two of the previous “Saw” films (“Saw” and “Saw VI”).

On the other hand, it still convincingly ranked as Friday’s #1 film at the US box office.

The first “Saw” film since 2010 had earned $7.2 million by the close of its first day. The count more than doubles that of the day’s #2 film.

It puts “Saw” on track for an opening weekend tally in the $15-18 million range, which will be more than enough for a weekend victory.

“Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween,” last weekend’s winner, was this Friday’s #2 film with $2.6 million. “Geostorm” took third place with $1.6 million, while “Happy Death Day” earned #4 with $1.5 million.

Newcomer “Thank You For Your Service” drew a paltry $1.5 million; it was the day’s #5 film. It may only reach about #4 million by the end of the weekend.

The day even worse for new release “Suburbicon,” which managed just $1.1 million in its opening day. It narrowly trailed “Blade Runner 2049” (also $1.1 million) to rank as Friday’s #7 film.

“Surburbicon” is on track for just $2.5-3.5 million in opening weekend receipts.
