“Blade Runner 2049” may have convincingly won the US weekend box office, but its actual total was certainly nothing about which to write home.
Per studio estimates, the film earned only $31.5 million in its opening weekend.
Going into the weekend, analysts were expecting about $50 million. That figure, it should be noted, was modest in its own right — $50 million would hardly have been a spectacular result for a film with this budget, promotional campaign and brand recognition.
Fellow new release “The Mountain Between Us” takes #2 with $10.1 million, while “It” grabs #3 on the strength of its $9.7 million. “It” now boasts a cumulative total of $304.9 million.
“My Little Pony: The Movie” debuts at #4 with $8.8 million, and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” takes #5 with $8.1 million (cume now $80.0 million).
