Syfy’s “Blood Drive” Has Been Canceled; Creator Offers Statement Following Finale

Shortly after the season one finale aired, the “Blood Drive” creator revealed there will be no season two.

Wednesday’s “Blood Drive” episode marked the first season finale.

It will also serve as the serious finale.

In a post on his Midnight Grindhouse blog, creator James Roland revealed that Syfy canceled the buzzy – but low-rated – series.

“Unfortunately, your suspicions are correct. Syfy has canceled Blood Drive after one season,” wrote Roland. “I found out not too long ago, but have been trying to think of a way to tell you guys since I felt it was up to me to let the fans know.

“Ultimately I decided to wait until after the final episode aired so the news did not taint your experience. It simply didn’t seem right to burst the bubble so early, especially with how the last episode plays out. We always planned for a season two, but now that the future of the show is uncertain the final scenes seem so much more … final.”

Cancellation aside, Roland confirmed that he was “forever grateful” to Syfy for being the “only network with the steel to make the show in the first place.”

While Roland is “cautiously optimistic” that there is more story to tell, he admitted that there is “definitely no season two in the immediate future.”

Aided by immensely compatible lead-in support from “Mad Max: Fury Road,” the June series premiere drew decent numbers. It scored a 0.24 adults 18-49 rating and averaged 834,000 viewers.

The numbers quickly faded. Episode two drew 627,000 viewers, and all subsequent episodes drew fewer than 500,000. The past four broadcasts drew fewer than 400,000.
