Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito (featuring Justin Bieber)” spent the entire past week below #1 on the US iTunes sales chart. It was its longest time away from #1 since early May.
Sunday, it took back its throne.
In addition to its immense popularity and enduring buzz, “Despacito” is benefiting from a pricing discount on the digital store.
This week’s sales performance may have historical ramifications.
Assuming it held off DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts,” “Despacito” will tomorrow be named #1 on a fifteenth consecutive Billboard Hot 100.
The following week’s chart would therefore mark its chance to tie the 16-week record held by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day.”
That chart will account for sales and streams from the August 18-24 tracking week (as well as radio airplay from August 21-27).
The “Despacito” chart position encompasses the Bieber remix as well as Luis Fonsi’s original version. Also discounted, the original version is currently #13 on US iTunes.
