Ratings Update: Teen Choice 2017 Delivers Weak Performance

The 2017 Teen Choice Awards ceremony drew a small audience.

Update 2: Due to preseason football pre-emptions in the Seattle and Portland markets, preliminary numbers for Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards show may be subject to greater than typical revisions in the finals.

Per Showbuzz, the 2017 Teen Choice show drew a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and 1.94 million viewers in said preliminaries.

Last year’s show drew a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating and 1.66 million viewers.

Update: The good news: Based on fast national data, Sunday’s Teen Choice 2017 ceremony outdrew the 2016 edition.

The bad news: It was still a very little-watched affair.

According to fast national data posted by Showbuzz, Sunday’s Teen Choice ceremony drew a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating and averaged 1.94 million viewers.

Barring downward adjustments in the finals, the numbers will top the 0.5 adults 18-49 rating and 1.66 million viewer mark drawn by the 2016 edition. (The 2016 show drew a 0.6 and 1.84 million in the comparable fast nationals but was adjusted down in the finals)

They are not, however, particularly strong numbers. They are also well below the 0.8 rating and 2.57 million viewer mark drawn by the 2015 show (which was itself a soft performer).

Hour two of this year’s show faced daunting competition of “Game Of Thrones.” Viewership did not markedly decline in the 9PM hour (it fell from 1.98 million to 1.89), although one can make the case that it may have increased had the 9PM competition been lighter.

While they have generated ample interest on social networks, the past few Teen Choice Awards ceremonies drew very soft live+same-day television ratings.

Last year’s show was a particularly weak performer.

Based on early numbers, this year’s ceremony likely drew a similarly small audience.

According to overnight metered market data posted by Programming Insider, Sunday’s Teen Choice 2017 ceremony drew a 1.2 overnight household rating.

The figure precisely matches that drawn by last year’s show, which was down 29% from the 2015 edition.

Last year’s show ended up drawing a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating and 1.66 million in overall viewership. The demo rating and viewership figure for this year’s show should be available at around 11:15AM ET.

— In addition to waning interest in the “Teen Choice” franchise (at least as a live TV broadcast), this year’s episode faced the challenge of “Game Of Thrones.” The HBO juggernaut aired opposite the second hour of Teen Choice 2017.
