“Dunkirk” Leads US Friday Box Office, “Girls Trip” Takes Second, “Valerian” Tanks

“Dunkirk” positions itself for a convincing weekend box office victory.

The critically acclaimed “Dunkirk” took first place at the US box office victory. Based on its margin of victory, it should have no trouble retaining its crown through the weekend.

The new release earned $19.8 million at the domestic Friday box office.

Its closest competition came from “Girls Trip,” which earned $11.7 million Friday.

Based on those hauls, “Dunkirk” should reach upwards of $50 million by the close of tracking on Sunday. “Girls Trip” should land in the $25-32 million range.

“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” this weekend’s other notable new release, took third at the Friday box office. The film earned a mere $6.5 million Friday and is on track for a weekend in the $14-18 million range.

While few expected “Valerian” to be a major hit in the US, this performance is still very disappointing given the film’s high profile and, more importantly, massive production cost.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” was Friday’s #4 film with $6.3 million, while a gross of $5.9 million earned “War Of The Planet Of The Apes” fifth place.
