“Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2” Dominates US Weekend Box Office; “Furious” Tops $200M

“Guardians” earns $145 million — and obliterates its weekend competition.

In the epitome of an unsurprising outcome, “Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol. 2” earns a dominant first place at the US weekend box office.

The sequel will earn an estimated $145.0 million by the close of tracking Sunday. Up from the $94.3 million opening weekend sum posted by the 2014 original, the count tops that of the #2 film by a factor of 17.

“The Fate Of The Furious,” that #2 film, added $8.5 million to its haul. The figure brings “The Fate Of The Furious” past the $200 million mark; it now boasts a cumulative total of $207.1 million in US receipts.

“The Boss Baby” rises one spot to #3 with $6.2 million (cume now $156.7 million), while “How To Be A Latin Lover” falls two places to #4 with $5.5 million (cume now $20.6 million).

Up one place from last week’s position, megahit “Beauty And The Beast” takes #5 with $4.9 million in weekend receipts. Its cumulative total is now an impressive $487.6 million.
