Given that he is the biggest name in the company, John Cena’s scheduled WWE WrestleMania match seemed rather underwhelming.
He was to partner with his real-life girlfriend Nikki Bella in a mixed tag match against real-life married couple The Miz and Maryse.
On paper, it was the epitome of a midcard, throwaway match.
The segment was not, however, really about the match. It was about what followed.
After he and Nikki defeated their foes, Cena told a story about how he asked Nikki a question while she was in a haze for her neck surgery. She was obviously not going to remember the question in her state, but he would tell her what it was at a later date.
The question, obviously, was whether she would marry him. WrestleMania was the later date.
Cena got down on one knee to reiterate the question, and Nikki obviously accepted. They hugged and kissed to a mixed reaction from the crowd.
