Aided by “on the hour” airplay support and the enthusiasm one would expect from a new Katy Perry song, “Chained To The Rhythm (featuring Skip Marley)” received a mammoth amount of opening day airplay at the pop and hot adult contemporary formats.
By the close of Friday, “Chained To The Rhythm” had received 2,059 Mediabase-monitored plays at pop radio. It had earned 863 spins at Hot AC.
Not since Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling” (2,487 pop spins, 843 Hot AC spins) has a song generated as much combined opening day airplay at the two formats.
As a point of comparison, Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” had received 1,356 pop spins and 611 Hot AC spins by the conclusion of its first day.
The pop spin count earns Katy Perry’s “Chained” #28 on the building Mediabase pop chart, which ranks songs based on the first six days of the Mediabase tracking week. With John Legend’s building #27 “Love Me Now” fading and The Chainsmokers’ building #11 “Closer” and The Weeknd’s building #13 “Starboy” set to be removed as recurrents, “Chained” may be able to reach the Top 25 by the close of tracking.
The Hot AC spin count slots “Chained To The Rhythm” at #27 on the format’s building chart.
