Ratings: FOX’s “STAR” Wins Timeslot; “Empire” Rises For Fall Finale (Updated)

Update: Its “Empire” retention was not quite as strong as suggested by the overnights, but FOX’s “STAR” still managed to win its timeslot in adults 18-49.

According to fast national data posted by Showbuzz, the “STAR” premiere drew a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating and 6.73 million total viewers.

It was the 9PM hour’s #1 program in the key demo.

Airing in the 8PM hour, the aforementioned “Empire” drew a 2.7 adults 18-49 rating and 7.57 million total viewers for its fall finale. Last week’s episode posted a 2.5 rating and 7.00 million viewers in the show’s usual 9PM timeslot.

In the epitome of a predictable outcome, the premiere of FOX’s “STAR” proved to be compatible with the fall finale of FOX’s “Empire.”

According to metered market data posted by Programming Insider, Wednesday’s premiere drew a 4.8 overnight household rating.

A solid number, the figure also reflects strong retention from “Empire.” FOX’s flagship drama drew a 5.2 overnight household rating in the 8PM hour.

While the retention may not be quite as strong in adults 18-49 and total viewership (those figures are due later today), it is hard to imagine the hold being weak in those columns.

It is certainly not a shock that “STAR,” a musical drama created by Lee Daniels and featuring a diverse cast, paired well with “Empire.” The question now becomes how many of the premiere night viewers will stick with the show when it resumes in January — without direct support from FOX’s leading drama.
