Darren Criss Confirmed As Backstage Host For “Hairspray Live!”

No stranger to musicals, Darren Criss will be involved in NBC’s “Hairspray Live!”

He will not, however, be part of the actual show. The actor will serve as the show’s backstage host.

Criss will appear several times on the NBC broadcast (as well as the 7:30-8PM pre-show) to share updates from behind-the-scenes. He will also check-in on the live viewing parties being thrown by NBC affiliates in Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.

He will also host a live companion show on Facebook Live.

According to NBC, “The digital companion show will feature 35 unique camera angles of what’s happening behind the scenes of the big broadcast as it happens, special access to the cast for their take on making this live spectacle come to fruition, fun facts about all things ‘Hairspray’ and other digital extras to enhance the viewer’s experience.”

“Other ‘Hairspray Live!’ social activations include a custom-elevated social media lounge offering 360-degree views of the “Hairspray Live!” sets where top social media influencers will be able to interact with Criss during live on-air and Facebook check-ins, engage with the live audience, create content from behind the scenes and post to social during the live show,” adds NBC.

“Hairspray Live!,” the fourth installment in NBC’s annual “Live!” musical series, airs December 7.
