“Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” Wins Weekend Box Office; “Deepwater Horizon” Earns #2

The US weekend box office race concluded without surprise: “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” debuted at #1, while fellow newcomer “Deepwater Horizon” took #2.

Per studio estimates, “Peregrine’s” earned $28.5 million in its first weekend of release. “Deepwater Horizon” followed with $20.0 million.

“The Magnificent Seven,” last week’s winner, fell to #3 with $15.7 million in weekend receipts (cume now $61.6 million). “Storks” dropped two spots to #4 with $13.8 million (cume: $38.8 million), while “Sully” earned $8.4 million for a fifth place finish (cume: $105.4 million). It was #3 last week.

“Masterminds,” the weekend’s other major new release, opened at #6. It earned a soft $6.6 million.
